Nationwide and even in our local community, there is often a great difference in the family histories and daily experiences of people of different ethnic backgrounds, often referred to as a 'racial divide'. This divide manifests itself in many ways to separate us from our neighbors of different backgrounds, and often results in political, economic, or social policies that promote institutionalized disparities that are not in accord with our seven Unitarian Universalist principles. This project will address our own understanding of this problem, as well as the root causes and community effects of it. We will attempt to educate ourselves, grow in our relationships with others of different backgrounds, and take action to ameliorate some of the effects of the divide that separates us from our neighbors. Currently, the main objectives of the Task Force are:
- To understand culture
and diversity in building community,
- Build Relationships
with people from different culture,
- Help heal from the
effects of internalized oppression
- Create strategies
and activities for reducing racial prejudice and oppression
- Learn to be an ally
for people from diverse groups and backgrounds
- Create opportunities
for members of the community to identify their similarities, differences and
assets.
- Build an inclusive
community
Recent and Upcoming events sponsored by the BBC Task force include:
Beginning March 2011 - Building the World We Dream About
Building the World We Dream About is a
Unitarian Universalist program that seeks to interrupt the workings of racism
and transform how people from different racial/ethnic groups understand and
relate to one another. It consists of 24 two-hour workshops, with Taking It
Home activities, reflections, and readings to be done between workshops. The
program creates opportunities for participants to practice dreaming our world
otherwise, and then commit to new, intentional ways of being.
Module I of BtWWDA is concluding now. Module II will be offered on June 5 and June 12. Following modules will be offered in the Fall. For more information, please contact our minister, Rev. Greg Ward.
January 16, 2011 - Building the Beloved Community for All In honor of
the work and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., the Unitarian Universalist
Church of the Monterey Peninsula presents a workshop of racial justice and
personal change. Growing out of the newly released “American Family: Things
Racial,” Stacy Cusulos and Diane Woods will engage participants in reflection
and exploration of the many ways we can each make a difference in the lives of
those around us and—as Dr. King called us to do—“make justice a reality for all
of God’s children.”
